Balancing Biochemistry

Biochemistry refers to the chemical activities inside our bodies. These activities are crucial to our well being and greatly affect our behaviour, emotions, learning and performance. The field has grown tremendously at the turn of the century. We now know a lot more on how we can change our biochemistry to our advantage. The biochemistry field is very broad.

At Spectrum Learning, we focus on a few important aspects

Exposure to toxic elements such as Arsenic, Lead, Mercury and etc

Exposure to toxic elements is more widespread that we think. We found that even in developed countries, many are exposed to toxic elements without realizing it.
Eg: Excessive consumption of fish and seafoods can result in accumulation of Mercury in the body. Such toxic elements can negatively affect our health and performance.  Mercury causes oxidative damage to cells and many researches showed that it can cause memory loss, symptoms of ADHD (inattentiveness) and symptoms of autism.

Glandular conditions – Thyroid and Adrenals

Eg: Our glands produce hormones that affect our emotions and behaviour. A sluggish thyroid will lead to low energy levels and a foggy mind. Weak adrenals will diminish a person’s ability to cope with stress.

Nutritional imbalances

Similar to toxic exposure, nutritional imbalances are more widespread that we think. This could possibly due to the narrow range of foods in most people’s diet. Eg: A low sodium/potassium ratio can lead to depression and mood swings. A high copper/Zinc ratio can lead to learning difficulties and hyperactivity.

Food allergies

Many suffer from food allergies without realizing it. Most food allergies do not show up as skin rashes or itchiness. Other symptoms associated with food allergies include headaches, irritability, hyperactivity, foggy mind and etc.

Gut conditions

This refers to the conditions in the small and large intestines. Many special needs children suffer from severe gut problems such as yeast and bacteria overgrowth. This overgrowth results is excessive organic acids which tend to be absorbed and circulated through the body. These organic acids can be very harmful to the body. It can also result in digestion and absorption problems. Symptoms can include chronic fatigue and depression.

Great advances in the field of biological tests have enabled us to go beyond symptoms and questionnaire findings. We use a variety of laboratory tests to determine the internal biochemistry of our clients. The laboratory tests that we use include:

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis

    1. Exposure to toxic elements
    2. Nutritional imbalances
    3. Certain types of food allergies
    4. Evaluation of thyroid and adrenal activities

Urine Analysis

    1. Organic acid
    2. Peptides
    3. Oxalates
    4. Other metabolites

Blood test

    1. Specific food allergies
    2. General health condition

In our experience, biochemical imbalances may not result in diseases or illnesses. But it may reduce our well-being and negatively affect our behaviour and ability to perform and learn. Improving the balance can lead to a better quality of life!
